The capital city of Laos is weaving along the Mekong River, Vientiane, the capital of Laos, emits an atmosphere of timelessness. Vientiane, which translates as Sandalwood City, is a city of villas and boulevards. It is one of three classic Indochinese cities (including Saigon and Phnom Penh) that most strongly conjure up images of exotic Eurasian settings. Although Vientiane is the largest city in the country, it is still small enough to get to know easily. The tree-lined boulevards and old temples impart an old world charm in spite of passing traffic. This laid back town possesses a charisma that no one can resist.

things to see in vientiane

Capital of Laos, Vientiane, nestled peacefully in a languid bend in the Mekong Vientiane exudes the air of an easy-going town rather than chaotic capital. Walking past old colonial mansions that line the broad, airy boulevards you could be forgiven for thinking you were in Europe, whilst the slow-pace and friendly atmosphere are quintessentially Laos. Despite its chequered past, Vientiane (pronounced ‘Wieng Chan’ by the locals) is a laid-back city with a number of interesting wats and lively markets. The most important national monument in Laos is Pha That Luang (the Great Sacred Stupa), which is a symbol of both Buddhism and Lao sovereignty. Other sights of interest include Wat Pha Kaew, a former royal temple which is now a museum and Wat Si Saket, the oldest temple in Vientiane. Xieng Khuan is a collection of compelling Buddhist and Hindu sculptures located in a meadow, 24km (15mi) south of Vientiane. Experience it and make sure to check best Laos tour offers today.

Vientiane has good blend of choices for top-end hotels and as many guesthouses, many of them moderately expensive, but plenty of lower-priced rooms have become available in the last few years. Most of the accommodation is in central Vientiane. You can eat at cafes, street stalls, beer halls or restaurants, offering everything from rice noodles to filet mignon. For good Lao meals, try the Dong Palan Night Market on the east bank of the Nong Chan ponds.

Vientiane is not the illicit entertainment palace it was in the early 1970s: brothels are now prohibited, the marijuana stands have disappeared from the markets and beer has replaced opium as the nightly drug of choice. Entertainment ranges from live music and discos – usually electrified Lao folk music or Western pop – to Thai, Chinese, Indian and even Bulgarian films. Tribal crafts, fabrics, jewellery and furniture are all good buys in Vientiane.

vientiane itinerary for 3 day stay

The first day of Vientiane tour will be a glance at Laos capital to know the main monument and temples and the other must see attractions, the famous Stupa of Pha That Luang (the most important monument of the country and national symbol) that is located on the outskirts of the city (just over 5 km from the center) and where we can admire its famous Reclining Buddha.

Next to the stupa we can also visit the Wat That Luang Neua temples and the Wat That Luang Tai, where we can admire the beauty of its classic Laotian style architecture. Once the visit is over and after having lunch in the surroundings, we will return to Vientiane to meet and spend the afternoon, contemplating the sunset over the Mekong River in Chao Anouvong Park. One back to the hotel we can go to dinner at the famous night market (Riverside Night Market) of the city.

The second day of our stay in Vientiane we will dedicate it to make an excursion to know the famous Buddha Park. Here is a huge parkland area and theme park with hundreds of Buddha or Hindu sculptures of which the famous Reclining Buddha or Wat Xieng Khuan (one of the longest in the world with almost 120 m long) and the Pumpkin Tower or Pumpkin Tower stand out. After visiting the Buddha Park we will return to the city, where after relaxing we will go to dinner at the Nam Phou square, to enjoy the delicious Laotian cuisine and enjoy some music show.

The suggested 3 day itinerary for Vientiane come to an end and to know the rest of important attractions and temples that Vientiane has to offer. On this final route through the city we can visit places like the Presidential Palace, Wat Haw Pha Kaeo, Wat Sisaket, Wat Si Muang and the Black Stupa or That Dam. To end the day we will visit the COPE center of Vientiane to be interested in his work in the creation of prosthetics for those affected by anti-personnel mines (unfortunately very common in certain areas of the country) and we will spend the afternoon relaxing in the Chao Anouvong Park and we will repeat the dinner both in the night market or in Nam Phou Square.

If you come to Vientiane to apply for your visa to Thailand this city will be perfect to be entertained a few days. The best way to know the interesting points and tours of Vientiane would be walking or cycling. As much to go to know the Buddha Park like the Stupa of of Pha That Luang you will be able to go in bus or tuk tuk although the best thing will be rent a motorcycle.
