Locally known as Vien Bao Tang Lich Su, the museum of Vietnamese history built in 1929 by the Societe des Etudes Indochinese, was once the National Museum of the Republic of Vietnam. This notable French style museum displaying a collection of fine artifacts presenting the evolution of the Vietnamese Culture, the displays are ranges from the Bronze Age Dong Son civilization dating back to sometimes 2000 BC and the Funan civilization from 1st to 6th centuries AD to the Cham, Khmer and Vietnamese.
It is worth to visit Museum of Vietnamese history in Saigon. Highlights of displays include valuable items taken from Angkor wat temple of Cambodia, a fine collection of Buddha statues, the perfectly preserved mummy of a local woman who died in 1869, excavated from Xom Cai in District 5, and some exquisite stylised mother of pearl Chinese characters inlaid into panels. Also housing a branch of the shop Nguyen Freres , the museum is just inside the main gate to the city’s botanic gardens and zoo.
